Mural

Apr 26, 2021

During the spring break we saw the school yard get something of a facelift in the form of a beautiful school mural. This mural is representative of the school but also includes aspects of the wider community. The mural features elements of the sea and our surrounding skyline.

Earlier in the year each class had a zoom session with the Artist Violet Dempsey. During these sessions the children were asked to think about and discuss the word ‘Shellybanks’ and come up with words, pictures and symbols that they associated with our school. Each child designed a mural of their own and these images were shared with the artist. Violet took elements from each of the children’s works and merged them together to create this special piece, exclusively for Shellybanks.

This wonderful piece of artwork also includes a blackboard at the far end to allow the children of Shellybanks to create their own masterpieces. A special thanks to Fionnuala for her hard work over the last two years on this project. Here is a video taken by the artist of the painting process. The funding for the mural came from the Creative Schools initiative and we thank Blaithin Quinn, our creative associate for guiding us through it all.
